Hey,

As you all are probably aware, there is a new national racing class being formed by NMPRA called Electric Formula One or EF-1. The planes are electric powered and resemble the small and nimble International Formula One class at Reno. The planes are intended to be an inexpensive electric option to go along with the faster and more expensive Q-500 (AMA428) and Q-40 (AMA424) planes. They can be run on the same course and at the same events, or on thier own as a stand alone. Full rules can be found here:http://nmpra.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2379

The rules are designed to allow ARF's to compete on an even footing with those who want to build their own planes, which I think is key to attract more folks. More guys like the ARF option and thats great. The planes can use an inexpensive HK motor, battery & ESC yielding a power package for less than $100! The planes are larger and easier to see, faster than what we currently run (about 120 mph) and being a National class, it will give those who wish the ability to travel to other races with a known legal setup.

I would propose that if there is enough interest, that we run this class starting partway through the season when enough folks are ready (3-4 to start) on our existing 1/12th scale course. While this is not a nationally approved course, we obviously can do as we wish for our races and still have the chance to race at other places too.

So far the ARF kits consist of only one, the E-Flite Pogo. There is a Shoestring,  Dara, Rivets, Outrageous ARF's to be released in the next month or two however. In addition to the ARf's, there are a few kits available.

While I'm sure you could paint it and make it smooth, I think you'll agree that is a pretty far reach from the spirit of the rules which are intended to be a "stock" airframe race.

Maybe we need an amendment to the rules which specifically adresses these concerns?

I have a little bit different view on this. Tape for repairs is one thing, but to cover your wing with film I don't think is within the spirit of the rules. Yes you could use Ultracote over the foam, but there may actually be a speed advantage there. The stock wing is quite porous and I could see a smooth surface going faster. Take a look a Jon's Cloud Dancer, it has a film covered wing.

A tape repair is one thing, even if it is covers most of the wing. A purposely smooth racing wing is another altogether.

Way back in the day, 20 years or so ago flybarless was all the rage. There was no such thing as any kind of electronic stability augmentation. In fact the gyro was actually a gyro that spun up and required a separate sub-C Nicad pack to run it! I had a GMP Cobra I think it was that was flybarless. It hovered less stable but was more precise to fly. It was very desireable for FAI type flying. As 3D style flying became more prevelant, the flybar offered significant advantages with quicker resonse and higher cyclic rates. Dunno if that is stiill the case but neat to see some experimentation none the less. good luck!

Thanks for linking the rules Patrick, I guess I should have done that  This does look like a neat class, and for me, there is the attraction that other clubs may run it and I could compete outside our little pond.  Even a Nats event is possible.

I know for sure that Horizon is planning an arf "Pogo" LR1-A due in April for about $150. I'm sure GP and others are working on them as well. Apparently there has been good support from the industry.

The National Miniature Pylon Racing Association, or NMPRA is the driving force in sanctioned pylon racing in the US & abroad. They are responsible for the rule making,  and field a team for the Worlds every year.

Recently they have proposed a new class called Electric Formula One, or EF-1. The planes resemble full scale formula one aircraft and are very neat!  This is one of the planes I have been working on recently. Anyway, if anyone is interested there is a great discussion over at RC Groups.
