Title: Some days...
Post by: patrick_ohalloran on September 06, 2009, 11:34:51 PM
It's not often one crashes twice the same day, a feat I seemed to manage comfortably today. First I managed to bash into a 1" wide pylon pole - that wasn't too bad, just a matter of  epoxy and a new cowl till I realized the motor shaft was also bent [that's also fixable]. Then I figured I don't get to the field all that often so I'd fly this little Alfa Mig-15. Well, on landing, sorta cross wind, slowed it down too much, wind got under the wing and my reactions weren't there to apply aileron and full throttle. The belly slop destroyed the nose and wing mount. Doesn't look repairable. Unfortunate, only 4 flights and an enjoyable machine to fly.

So then I'm at home and I figure I'll discharge all packs to 50%. Now I don't have a discharge system setup so I go and stick each pack into the 450 powered La-7. All seems normal until I see smoke coming from the motor. It seems perhaps the combination of a long run and poor motor ventilation caused the motor to overheat. Seems to be destroyed.

All in all a pretty expensive day from an aeromodelling point of view!

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes Patrick. I think just about everyone in the hobby has had a day like this!

???Patrick, Believe me when I say I know what you're talking about. I've had 3 maiden's on Hellcat's that ended in demise  :'(, plus one on the third flight. Two were 60 size warbirds. What motor smoked? Maybe I have one I'll sell you cheap.  ;D.

The Warbird pylon Eflite 450. Guess I could figure out how to rewind it.

So I'd need to get the end bell off - not sure if it's pressed on or screwed on (on T-28 motor it's actually screwed on), get the right gauge wire, rewind it with the same number of winds to be legal.... seems like a lot of work.

;DPatrick, it would be alot easier to buy a new one. There are kit motors out there that you can wind yourself but they are usually smaller indoor foamie motor without a lot of wires. To get the can off just remove the e clip and pull, it will pop right off. Guy was trying to say unless you get the exact wire eflite uses then you............ ;)
